Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has clarified that the latest phase of Operation Sasamaki is taking aim at both marijuana and methamphetamine as part of a balanced approach against all illicit drugs. Recently, he has noted growing concerns among the community that law enforcement efforts have been disproportionately focused on marijuana, overshadowing the dangers posed by methamphetamine, which he describes as a more harmful substance.

The operation recorded a striking 75 percent rise in illicit drug cases in the preceding month, with 215 total cases reported, including 190 instances of unlawful possession and 25 cases of unlawful cultivation. In April alone, police reported 195 marijuana-related arrests and 20 involving methamphetamine, revealing significant ongoing trends in drug activities in Fiji.

Tudravu highlighted that the prevalence of marijuana is largely driven by local cultivation, resulting in a higher number of arrests. However, he also clarified that law enforcement remains vigilant against all forms of drug offenses, asserting, “Whether green or white, the momentum of operations remains the same for both,” and that recent weeks have seen numerous arrests tied to the proceeds of crime, indicating they are targeting those at the top of the supply chain.

The commissioner urged public support in combating the drug crisis, emphasizing the substantial risks both marijuana and methamphetamine pose not just to individuals but to families and entire communities. His call to action stresses the importance of community involvement, which has proven crucial in prior operations like Sasamaki, where collaboration has led to significant successes against drug trafficking and cultivation.

The optimistic outlook from these operations is bolstered by the evident progress made and the proactive stance taken by the Fiji Police. The ongoing efforts not only focus on addressing current issues but also aim to instill hope for a future where illicit drug use is significantly reduced, fostering safer environments for all citizens.

Such initiatives underscore the critical nature of continued community engagement in the fight against drug offenses, illustrating that a united front can lead to a healthier and safer Fiji.
