A recent special operation on Taveuni aimed at combating theft of yaqona and dalo has led to multiple arrests. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Operations, Livai Driu, reported that the initiative successfully addressed outstanding cases, including the arrest of a 32-year-old farmer who was charged with two counts of dalo theft.
In addition to the backlog cases, six men were arrested during the operation for various offenses, including yaqona and dalo theft, criminal intimidation, and unlawful possession of illicit drugs. The arrests took place between January 22nd and 28th.
ACP Driu emphasized the importance of community involvement in these operations, stating that the swift exchange of information from local residents has been crucial. He expressed gratitude for the community members who have stepped forward with tips and encouraged the ongoing collaboration between law enforcement and the community.
“We will continue to assess and look at the best possible means of curbing dalo and yaqona theft, with the support of other stakeholders and communities,” Driu added, indicating a commitment to maintaining public safety and fostering collaboration.
This operation highlights the proactive measures being taken to address local crime and the positive impact of community engagement in law enforcement efforts. By working together, the community and police can create a safer environment for all residents.
