Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, has announced that police forces will ramp up drug enforcement efforts during the festive season. He emphasized that the strategy to combat drugs is a comprehensive one aimed at dismantling drug syndicates effectively.
Mr. Driu explained that operations will not only be general in nature but also involve covert actions taken by the intelligence unit. The police will focus on various areas including residential neighborhoods, specific groups, suspected individuals, and will actively stop vehicles at targeted locations based on gathered intelligence.
He expressed gratitude to community leaders and the support from local communities, reinforcing that tackling the drug issue requires a united effort. While recent operations have shown a notable decline in methamphetamine seizures, there has been an increase in marijuana-related findings.
Last week, significant arrests were made following inspections at local borders and wharves, including police K9 units screening a vessel arriving from Kadavu at the Narain Jetty. Mr. Driu observed that although meth finds are down, the rise in marijuana cases is concerning in the recent months.
To ensure road safety and monitor driver behavior, police will also enhance their presence through checkpoints and roadblocks. Mr. Driu noted that the visibility of these roadblocks influences drivers’ attitudes, leading to safer driving practices when police are present.
This proactive stance on drug enforcement highlights the commitment of law enforcement to uphold community safety and combat drug-related issues during one of the busiest times of the year. The collaboration with community members signals a positive trend toward creating a safer environment for all.
In summary, the intensive drug operations led by the police not only target illicit substances but aim for a communal effort to enhance public safety, particularly during the festive season.
