Ono-i-Lau showcased exceptional fielding and impressive bowling skills, leading them to a semi-final victory over Lakeba A in the Lau Cricket competition held in Tubou, Lautoka. In a competitive limited overs match, Ono-i-Lau secured a total of 122 runs, surpassing Lakeba’s score of 103.

The standout performer for Ono was Mesake Cama, who scored 41 runs. Other contributions came from Asaeli Bale with 25 runs, Taitusi Tuityawa with 18 runs, and Jeremaia Veiseyaki, who added 14 runs to the scoreboard. For Lakeba, Alisaya Lutukiwai was the top scorer with 31 runs, followed by Viliame Tuinaceva and Josetaki Nopoci, who scored 12 and 10 runs, respectively.

This victory marks a significant achievement for Ono, as they advance to the finals where they will face the winner of the Komo-Lakeba C match, the results of which were unavailable at press time. Lakeba, a formidable team that had claimed victory in the Lau meet since 1985, faced a surprising setback in this match, while Ono’s triumph has reignited enthusiasm for cricket on the island.

After a period of diminished interest in cricket during the 1960s and early 1970s, when rugby was the dominant sport, Ono’s cricket scene saw a revival in the early 1980s, culminating in their 1984 victory of the Crompton Cup in Lautoka. The recent win over Lakeba reflects the positive direction of youth cricket development initiatives on the island.

In a broader celebration, the island also marked the 70th birthday of Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, concluding a week of festivities. This celebration coincided with various sports finals on the island and the announcement of the Lau provincial team for the upcoming Island Zone rugby championship in Suva this August. Guests participating in the events were expected to depart the island by midnight, rounding off an eventful week for the community.

This article highlights the resilience and revitalization of cricket on Ono-i-Lau, suggesting a bright future for the sport within the community. The dedication to youth development and the recent success could inspire more local talent to rise and create a legacy in cricket.
