Ono-i-Lau showcased exceptional fielding and impressive bowling skills to secure a victory over Lakeba A in the semi-finals of the Lau Cricket competition held in Tubou, Lautoka. The match report from May 12, 1990, revealed that Ono-i-Lau scored 122 runs, outpacing Lakeba’s total of 103 runs.

Mesake Cama emerged as the standout player for Ono, contributing 41 runs to the team’s score. Supporting him were Asaeli Bale with 25 runs, Taitusi Tuityawa with 18, and Jeremaia Veiseyaki who added 14 runs. In contrast, Lakeba’s top scorer was Alisaya Lutukiwai with 31 runs. Additional runs for Lakeba were contributed by Viliame Tuinaceva and Josetaki Nopoci, who scored 12 and 10 runs respectively.

This victory not only propelled Ono into the finals but also marked a significant upset, as Lakeba had been the reigning champions in the Lau meet since 1985. Ono’s triumph reflects the positive impact of their youth cricket development programs, which have revitalized the sport’s prominence on the island since the early 1980s. Prior to this resurgence, cricket had taken a back seat to rugby during the 1960s and early ’70s.

In a related celebration, the community honored the 70th birthday of Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, culminating in a week of festivities. Various sports finals were held, coinciding with the announcement of the Lau provincial team for the upcoming Island Zone rugby championship in Suva in August.

This story exemplifies how sporting achievements can uplift a community and celebrate its heritage. The triumph of Ono-i-Lau is not just a win in a cricket match but also a testament to perseverance and development in youth sports on the island. The atmosphere of togetherness during the birthday celebrations further enriches the community’s spirit, promising a bright and engaging future for sports in Lau.
