A 30-year-old resident of Davuilevu Housing is facing legal action after allegedly defrauding victims out of over $400 through online scams. The individual is scheduled to appear in the Suva Magistrates Court today, charged by the Cyber Crime team of the Fiji Police Force with two counts of obtaining financial advantage by deception and two counts of possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime.

The allegations state that on February 11 of last year, the accused posted advertisements for rental cars on a social media page named ‘Elite Rental Cars.’ One victim reportedly transferred $300 through an online payment platform in response to this ad, but the accused failed to deliver the promised rental service. The incident was subsequently reported to the Lami Police Station.

On February 11, 2023, the same individual allegedly scammed another victim, gaining an additional $160 under similar circumstances. This incident was reported to the Nasinu Police Station.

This case reflects a troubling trend in Fiji, where online scams have become increasingly common, particularly concerning rental services. Recent reports have highlighted a series of similar scams where individuals have lost amounts ranging from $190 to $475, emphasizing the growing need for caution among consumers when engaging in online transactions.

The law enforcement’s commitment to addressing these fraudulent activities offers some hope, as proactive measures are underway to protect potential victims and foster a safer online environment. Such actions not only uphold justice but also encourage digital marketplace integrity, allowing legitimate businesses to thrive without the shadow of fraud.

As scams continue to emerge, it serves as a vital reminder for consumers to verify the authenticity of advertisements and transactions, ensuring their financial safety in a digital-first world.
