A 34-year-old woman has been charged with two counts of obtaining financial advantage and one count of possession of property suspected to be proceeds of crime. The charges stem from allegations that she dishonestly acquired $3,200 from the victim through an online bank transfer in March 2023. This fraudulent activity occurred after the victim clicked on a link shared on Facebook, which led to the unauthorized access of their bank account. The funds were subsequently transferred to the accused’s bank account, from which she then withdrew the money for her own use.

The incident was reported to the Namaka Police Station, prompting an investigation by the authorities. This case is part of a broader trend of online scams exploiting social media platforms to trick individuals into sharing sensitive information.

Recent reports indicate that similar fraudulent schemes have been on the rise, with other individuals facing charges for obtaining financial advantages through deception. One case involved two men who hacked a victim’s friend’s Viber account, which led to the victim transferring money under the false impression that the request was legitimate. Such incidents highlight the importance of vigilance when engaging in online activities and the need for individuals to be cautious about sharing personal information.

Authorities are urging the public to safeguard their personal information, particularly against phishing attempts disguised as messages from friends or family. By staying alert and informed, individuals can help protect themselves from falling victim to these scams.

This thoughtful approach not only highlights the growing issue of online deception but also serves as a reminder for the community to stay educated and cautious against similar threats in the future.
