A 40-year-old woman is set to appear in court today for charges of obtaining financial advantage through deceptive means. The allegations stem from an incident that occurred on July 24, 2024, where it is claimed that the woman fraudulently acquired $165 from a victim using the M-Paisa mobile payment platform.
According to police reports, the victim became interested in an iPhone advertised for sale on Facebook for $330. After reaching out to the accused to express her intent to purchase the phone, the woman was instructed to send a deposit of $165 to secure the item, with the promise that the phone would be delivered via courier.
After transferring the funds, the victim was unable to contact the accused, leading her to report the situation to the Tavua Police Station. Subsequently, the Fiji Police Force’s M-Paisa Taskforce Team charged the accused, who is now in custody and awaiting her court appearance at the Magistrates Court in Nabouwalu.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance when engaging in online transactions. As authorities continue to crack down on fraudulent activities and protect consumers, it is hoped that awareness will increase, helping to safeguard others from falling victim to similar scams in the future.
