Authorities are raising alarms that violence is extending beyond physical spaces such as homes and streets, increasingly manifesting in the digital realm through harassment, abuse, and detrimental behavior. This warning comes amid rising concerns that the festive season, a time frequently associated with increased alcohol consumption, may lead to a spike in violence, particularly directed at vulnerable groups including women, children, and individuals with disabilities.
Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran, emphasizes that celebrations should never compromise anyone’s safety. She urges the public to regard online abuse with the same gravity as offline violence, advocating for responsible action and vigilance.
Kiran stresses the importance of taking responsibility within one’s community: “If you know somebody—one of your friends or relatives who’s abusive, call them out. Talk to them and encourage them to seek help, but also report it. Report all forms of violence, online and offline.”
The Minister’s comments indicate a growing recognition that digital platforms are becoming battlegrounds for harmful behavior and that it is essential for society to reject all forms of violence. In her call to action, Kiran invites everyone to participate in fostering safer communities, both in real life and online, highlighting the critical role individuals can play in combating violence in all forms.
