Community advocate Lesi Vanuavou has launched a social media campaign to raise awareness about the urgent need for a flood-resistant bridge in the interior of Tavua, particularly at Tabutabu. He is responding to the pleas of residents from Nadelei and neighboring farming communities, who have faced severe damage from repeated flash flooding.

In a heartfelt online post, Vanuavou expressed the villagers’ frustrations over the recurring issues exacerbated by heavy rainfall, which resulted in flooding just yesterday afternoon. He emphasized that prior minor repairs to the Tabutabu crossing have been inadequate, failing to provide a long-term solution against the rising water levels after strong downpours.

“The community has endured years of ineffective repairs that fail to hold up under increased water volume,” Vanuavou stated. He described the bridge as essential infrastructure, crucial for farmers, families, school children, and emergency services.

“This bridge is a lifeline for all members of the community,” he said, highlighting the issues of livelihood, safety, and basic mobility that persist without reliable access. Recognizing the immediate need for action, he urged authorities, stakeholders, and development partners to respond swiftly to the situation. The call to action was underscored by images shared by concerned villagers, showcasing the extent of the damage and the dire need for assistance in constructing a durable bridge.

Vanuavou’s initiative sheds light on the pressing infrastructure challenges faced by rural communities, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts to address such critical needs. By rallying support through social media, there is hope that these voices will inspire prompt action from the necessary stakeholders, ultimately improving the lives of those in Tavua.
