Olympic gold medallist Semi Kunatani has officially joined Old Glory DC for the 2026 season of Major League Rugby, as announced by the Washington, D.C.-based club last week. This move comes ahead of the upcoming MLR campaign and signifies a new chapter in Kunatani’s career.
The Nadi-born flanker previously showcased his talent with Rugby FC Los Angeles during the 2025 MLR season, where he made a significant impact in 11 matches, scoring one try and accumulating 328 meters for his team. An accomplished player, the 35-year-old has also represented the Flying Fijians, earning 10 Test caps since his international debut in 2017.
Before transitioning to XVs rugby, Kunatani was an outstanding figure in rugby sevens, featuring in 96 matches on the World Rugby Sevens Series and scoring an impressive 54 tries. His most notable achievement came when he played a key role in securing Fiji’s first Olympic gold medal in rugby sevens at the Rio 2016 Games. Additionally, he contributed to Fiji’s silver medal victory at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Kunatani’s extensive experience includes stints with prominent clubs overseas, including Stade Toulousain and Castres in France’s Top 14, as well as Harlequins in England’s Premiership Rugby. His transition to Old Glory DC not only enhances the team’s roster but also brings a wealth of experience and skill to Major League Rugby, promising an exciting season ahead for fans and players alike.
