Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the current Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), is poised to secure another term as she remains the sole candidate for the position by the close of nominations on November 8, 2024. This announcement follows a notification from Ambassador Petter Ølberg, the Chairperson of the WTO General Council, who confirmed that no additional nominations were submitted by the deadline.

In a formal communication addressed to WTO members, Mr. Ølberg indicated that according to the established procedures, he is obligated to present a consolidated list of candidates after the nomination period closes. The results show that Dr. Okonjo-Iweala is the only individual who expressed interest in continuing her leadership role.

The nomination process for the next director-general of the WTO commenced on October 8, and members had until November 8 to submit their nominations. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, who has held her position since 2021, is willing to serve an additional four-year term, which would extend her leadership until August 31, 2025.

The WTO plays a crucial role in establishing and enforcing global trade regulations among nations, striving to facilitate the smooth and free flow of trade on an international scale.

This development marks a significant moment for the WTO as continuity in leadership can bring stability and further progress in addressing global trade challenges.

Summary: Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the current Director-General of the WTO, is the only candidate to have submitted her nomination for a second term, following the close of nominations on November 8, 2024. She has served in the position since 2021 and aims to continue promoting smooth global trade through her leadership.
