WALU Bay in Suva experienced significant disruption yesterday due to an oil leak at the Petro Oceania Fuels Terminal located along Foster Rd, which halted normal activities in the area. Local businesses were ordered to close, and employees were urged to evacuate for safety.

The National Fire Authority (NFA) announced that Syria and Argo streets in Walu Bay would remain closed until further notice to facilitate containment efforts. Fire crews were promptly deployed to the scene to manage the spill and ensure public safety.

Motorists and pedestrians were instructed to steer clear of the affected roads, with alternative routes provided. Police established cordons at the entrance of Foster Rd from Suva and at the roundabout where Reservoir Rd intersects, directing traffic from Suva to Edinburgh Drive and diverting vehicles approaching from Lami to Reservoir Rd.

Joel Israel, the acting chief executive officer of the NFA, confirmed that the situation was under control and that ongoing assessments and mitigation measures were being implemented. He also stated that the National Disaster Management Office had been notified and was actively monitoring the leak’s developments.

As investigations into the cause of the spill continue, updates about road conditions and safety measures will be provided to the public. The swift response from emergency services underscores the importance of public safety during incidents such as this, highlighting the resilience of the community in managing unexpected environmental challenges.
