The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has reported that only light oil and fuel are leaking from the sunken MV Sullivan in Suva Harbour. MSAF CEO Joeli Cawaki stated that their teams were engaged in efforts to prevent the spill from spreading further.

Cawaki explained that the nature of the leaked materials is lighter in consistency, which causes them to dissipate quickly upon reaching the surface. He assured that the team is equipped to handle any thicker oils, should they surface during the operation. Local mariners have been informed of the ongoing cleanup efforts.

In addition to the immediate response, water samples from the area have been collected and are being tested by the Water Authority of Fiji for safety. MSAF is committed to keeping the community updated, with a situation report scheduled post-cleanup and a morning meeting planned to assess ongoing efforts.

Cawaki also reached out to residents of Navukavu, surrounding villages, and the local community in Lami, reassuring them that there is no cause for alarm, as MSAF is actively managing the situation and working to remove the oil from the sunken vessel.

This proactive approach by the MSAF and collaboration with local authorities highlights a commitment to environmental protection and community safety. As they work diligently to resolve this incident, it serves as a reminder of the importance of quick action in mitigating potential environmental impacts from maritime incidents.

Summary: The MSAF is addressing a light oil leak from the sunken MV Sullivan in Suva Harbour, confirming effective cleanup measures and water testing. Community members are reassured of their safety as efforts continue to manage the situation.
