The CEO of the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), Joeli Cawaki, has confirmed that only light oil and fuel are leaking from the MV Sullivan, which sank in Suva Harbour. In response to the situation, MSAF officials have deployed a team into the water to prevent the oil from spreading further.

Cawaki reassured the public that the light oil and fuels that have surfaced are manageable, stating, “Once they come on the surface, they disseminate.” He went on to explain that the team is equipped with materials for cleaning and absorbing in the event that thicker oils are detected.

To ensure the safety of the water in the area, water samples have been sent to the Water Authority of Fiji for testing. Cawaki noted that they are actively monitoring the situation with support from the Water Police, who will conduct security checks around the location.

Additionally, Mr. Cawaki stressed that there is no cause for alarm among local residents, including those in Navukavu and surrounding villages, assuring them that the situation is being effectively managed. He stated, “We are looking at taking out all the oil from this sunken vessel.”

This proactive approach by MSAF highlights the importance of swift action in environmental protection and public safety. As the team continues to monitor the situation, they will provide updates to the community, reinforcing their commitment to addressing the issue thoroughly.

In summary, MSAF is diligently managing the oil leak from the MV Sullivan, ensuring both environmental safety and community reassurance. This event serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness in maritime safety and environmental stewardship.
