The Parliament Secretariat has confirmed that a vehicle associated with its office was involved in a road accident today. This incident reportedly involved the Speaker’s Official Vehicle, which was not occupied by the Speaker at the time of the accident on Rewa Street.

According to the Secretariat’s statement, they are currently awaiting a detailed police report to clarify the situation and are cooperating fully with the authorities as part of the investigative process. The Fiji Police Force provided additional details, stating that the accident occurred after 11 am when a vehicle, carrying two passengers, veered into the oncoming lane, colliding with the government vehicle that subsequently overturned. Fortunately, the only reported injury involved a passenger in the private vehicle, who was transported to the hospital for treatment.

This event highlights ongoing concerns regarding road safety in the region. Previous incidents, including a recent notable collision involving a container trailer and a minibus, have spurred discussions on the importance of vigilance among drivers, particularly those operating public service vehicles. Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana has consistently stressed the need for heightened awareness to prevent accidents and protect passengers.

As investigations into the current accident proceed, there remains hope for a renewed commitment to road safety and the implementation of measures that can reduce such occurrences in the future. Engaging in community awareness and reinforcing safe driving practices can potentially foster a safer environment on the roads, benefitting all users.
