In a thrilling matchup during the OFC Women’s Nations Cup, Vanuatu faced off against the Solomon Islands in Suva. Both teams displayed high intensity and determination throughout the match, marking round 2 of the competition.

The Solomon Islands drew first blood in the 17th minute with a slick goal from Ileen Pegi, who navigated through Vanuatu’s defense. Despite Vanuatu’s relentless attempts to even the score, including several hard shots, the first half concluded with the Solomon Islands holding a 1-0 lead.

The Solomon Islands’ goalkeeper, Zainab Donga, was instrumental in maintaining her team’s advantage, showcasing impressive saves and leadership on the field. Her consistent efforts thwarted any potential Vanuatu goals, allowing the Solomon Islands to stay ahead. Vanuatu’s Jane Alatoa and Rita Solomon formed a threatening pairing, creating opportunities but lacking the final touch.

The match intensified after halftime, when a quick turnover in the 57th minute saw Madeline Arukau extend the Solomon Islands’ lead to 2-0. In a crucial moment, Vanuatu was awarded a penalty kick in the 67th minute, but Henriette Sangul could not convert, leaving Vanuatu still searching for a goal.

Eventually, Vanuatu’s persistence paid off in the 81st minute when Leimata Simon found the net, marking her fourth goal of the tournament in just two matches. This well-deserved goal highlighted Vanuatu’s attacking efforts throughout the game, offering a glimmer of hope as they fought to continue their campaign in the tournament.

Seven minutes of extra time were added, but the Solomon Islands held firm, securing a hard-fought victory. After the match, Zainab Donga reflected on her experience, expressing pride in her performance and gratitude for the support from her team and coaches.

Despite a smaller crowd, mainly composed of university students, the presence of supporters showcased a growing enthusiasm for women’s football in the region. Organizers remain hopeful that as the tournament progresses, more fans will come out to support the teams.

This match not only showcased the competitive spirit of both teams but also highlighted progress in women’s football in the Oceania region, fostering optimism for the future of the sport.
