Anticipation is growing as Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands, gears up to host the much-anticipated Oceania Rugby Sevens Championship.
Following the successful 2023 Pacific Games and other regional sporting events, Honiara is affirming its position as a vibrant center for sports, culture, and tourism in the Pacific region. The upcoming tournament is expected to attract over 500 athletes, officials, delegates, and media representatives, alongside numerous visitors to the Solomon Islands.
Teams from across the Pacific will compete for a chance to qualify for the World Rugby 7s Challenger Series, with two men’s teams and one women’s team securing spots to showcase their talents on the global stage. Dagnal Dereveke, Chief Executive of Tourism Solomons, highlighted the event’s importance in promoting the destination to an international audience and boosting the tourism sector.
Dereveke noted that the successful hosting of major events like the 2023 Pacific Games has demonstrated the Solomon Islands’ capability to host prestigious tournaments, encouraging visitors to explore the islands beyond the sporting festivities.
The tournament’s pool draws have been revealed: in the men’s competition, the Fiji sevens development team is placed in Pool A alongside Tuvalu and Nauru. Meanwhile, the Australian development team will compete against Vanuatu, American Samoa, and the Japan development team in Pool B. Pool C consists of Samoa, Cook Islands, Kiribati, and New Caledonia, while Pool D features Tonga, the Solomon Islands, Niue, and Tahiti.
In the women’s division, the Fiji development team is grouped with the host nation, the Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu in Pool A. Pool B includes Samoa, American Samoa, and Vanuatu, while Pool C has Tonga, the Cook Islands, and Kiribati.
