The Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) is anticipating a transformative future for football in the region as it reports an encouraging 24 expressions of interest from various clubs eager to join the upcoming OFC Professional League, set to launch in January 2026. Clubs from a range of countries—including New Zealand, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Australia, New Caledonia, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tahiti, and Vanuatu—have signaled their desire to compete. Specifically, the applications include six from New Zealand, four each from Fiji, Papua New Guinea, and Australia, along with two from New Caledonia, and one each from Samoa, the Solomon Islands, Tahiti, and Vanuatu.
The finalization of club applications is ongoing, with the submission deadline stretching until the end of June 2025. This timeline ensures that clubs have ample opportunity to position themselves in what is expected to be an eight-team elite competition.
Stuart Larman, the OFC Professional League Manager, has expressed excitement over the strong response, viewing it as a significant milestone in the journey toward establishing a professional framework. “Over the last few years, a lot of work has gone into structuring a professional league that will accelerate the growth of football across the region. It is very exciting for all involved that the response shows so many clubs share our vision and passion to develop professional football across Oceania,” he remarked.
