World leaders, scientists, and civil society representatives have convened in Busan, South Korea, for the 10th Our Ocean Conference (OOC), aiming to shape the future of ocean conservation and climate leadership. Do-hyung Kang, Minister of Oceans and Fisheries of the Republic of Korea, highlighted the conference’s theme, “Our Ocean, Our Action,” which underlines the need for active participation and voluntary commitments from the private sector.

Reflecting on the past decade, Kang noted that the OOC has generated over 2,600 commitments and has significantly contributed to the establishment of marine protected areas (MPAs), with nearly half of global MPAs first announced at this platform. The conference is set to unveil an in-depth assessment of the commitments made since its inception, showcasing the ongoing progress in marine conservation efforts.

The significance of private sector engagement was emphasized with plans for a business summit focusing on shipping and digital oceans. Busan New Port, recognized as a major logistics hub, continues to innovate through digital technology, positioning itself as a smart and eco-friendly port. This aligns with South Korea’s broader commitment to combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing through advanced monitoring technologies.

Kang also pointed to the upcoming Third UN Ocean Conference in Nice, France, in June 2025, which will seek transformative actions supported by ocean science and funding for Sustainable Development Goal 14—focused on life below water. His optimism for cooperation and commitment during the Busan conference aims to solidify efforts in paving the way for impactful discussions in the UN Conference.

The focus on sustainable oceans and collaborative action resonates strongly, especially in light of similar calls from Pacific nations facing ocean-related challenges. Leaders in the region have emphasized the need for unity and the integration of traditional knowledge with scientific approaches in addressing these pressing issues.

Overall, the ongoing discussions and commitments made at the OOC present a hopeful outlook for global ocean management, encouraging international cooperation in safeguarding marine ecosystems for future generations.
