The National Union of Workers (NUW) is urging the Government to review the laws governing the security industry. This request was made by Fiji Trade Union Congress (FTUC) general secretary Felix Anthony in Lautoka.
Yesterday, the NUW signed a collective agreement with Evergreen International Fiji, covering all terms and conditions of employment for workers. Evergreen International Fiji operates as Wormald Security and Guard Force in Fiji, specializing in electronic security services like monitoring intruder alarms, access control, CCTV, and electronic fire detection systems. Anthony expressed concerns about the security industry in Fiji.
“We are looking forward to working with them. We don’t have this issue with Guard Force and certainly hope we never do,” he said, highlighting the exploitation prevalent in the industry. He pointed out that some night operators do not abide by the law or follow regulations, leading to significant wage theft. One claim against an operator is around $3 million, due to unpaid overtime and unlawful deductions.
Anthony called on the Government to revise the laws to ensure workers receive their legal entitlements. He emphasized the need for stricter inspections to ensure compliance and a level playing field for both employers and employees.
The general manager of Evergreen International Fiji, Mike Jamieson, expressed hope for improved outcomes for workers with the newly signed agreement.
