Consumption behaviors among the iTaukei people have been found to be less balanced compared to those of Indo-Fijians, as indicated by a recent study conducted by the University of the South Pacific. The study, titled “Dietary Patterns of Indo-Fijians and their comparison to patterns of iTaukei Fijians,” was presented by senior lecturer Dr. Naohiro Nakamura at the 2025 Pacific Update.

Dr. Nakamura highlighted that while the iTaukei consume more locally produced foods, their dietary patterns exhibit an excessive reliance on carbohydrates and insufficient intake of proteins, fruits, and vegetables. In contrast, the study revealed that Indo-Fijians maintain more balanced diets, despite sourcing much of their carbohydrate and protein content from imports.

The research aimed to provide a thorough analysis of dietary habits by gathering detailed dietary records from participants over a span of five days. This comparison was essential because previous studies primarily focused on the iTaukei, overlooking the dietary habits of Indo-Fijians.

The findings from this research could play a crucial role in addressing health issues related to nutrition within these communities, especially as non-communicable diseases continue to rise. The need for balanced diets is essential, given the historical emphasis on agricultural and health policies that may not fully consider the varied eating patterns and health outcomes across different ethnic groups.

Incorporating a broader perspective on dietary practices may also align with ongoing discussions about the importance of Indigenous foodways in promoting healthier eating within Pacific communities, as highlighted in recent forums addressing local food security and nutritional education.

These initiatives, alongside collaborative research efforts, provide a hopeful outlook for enhancing the nutritional health of the population by fostering a deeper understanding of dietary needs and promoting balanced dietary practices. Such actions could ultimately contribute to a healthier, more resilient community that honors both cultural and nutritional diversity.
