Anushka Ashika Chand was filled with emotion as she graduated with honors in Nursing from the University of Fiji last week, a milestone that deeply resonated with her due to her parents’ unwavering sacrifices. The 27-year-old was among many graduates at the university’s Saweni campus in Lautoka.
Reflecting on her journey, Anushka shared that the major turning point occurred when her father suffered a minor stroke, prompting a temporary halt to her education. Initially pursuing a degree in education, she found herself reconsidering her path as she took a semester off to care for her dad. Her father had always envisioned her as a nurse, a dream that motivated her to return to school and follow a nursing program despite her challenges.
Having completed a foundation program instead of the typical Year 13 studies, securing a position at the TISI Sangam School of Nursing was initially difficult. However, her parents’ dedication to her education was evident when they decided to withdraw money from their FNPF savings to finance her four years of studies at the University of Fiji, after the Tertiary Student Loan Scheme did not cover her.
An emotional highlight for Anushka was her parents’ journey from Vunika in Labasa to attend her graduation ceremony, a moment filled with pride and joy. Despite her fears of not meeting their expectations as a private student, the love and support from her family propelled her forward. As the first nurse in her maternal family, she felt a profound sense of accomplishment.
Looking ahead, Anushka plans to continue her education after gaining work experience and has aspirations to specialize in midwifery. Her heartfelt advice to young women aspiring to enter nursing is to maintain hope and cherish their supportive families.
Anushka Chand’s story is a powerful reminder of the strength of familial bonds and the importance of perseverance in overcoming obstacles. Her journey inspires others to pursue their dreams, regardless of the challenges they may face.
