Nursing Dreams: A Student’s Path to FNU

Meretinai Vaturaiyawa, a student at Nakorotubu Secondary School, has expressed her strong preference for the Fiji National University (FNU) as she looks ahead to her tertiary education. With aspirations of becoming a nurse, she shared her interest in the field during the FNU Open Day, where she focused on Food Science and explored opportunities within the College of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Science.

At just 16 years old, Vaturaiyawa noted the lack of healthcare professionals from her village, Namarai, in Nakorotubu, Ra. “There is a health centre at Namarai Village, but no one from my village or Veidrala works there,” she explained, emphasizing her goal to serve the community as a nurse in the future.

Reflecting on her visit to the FNU Open Day in Nasinu, she stated, “The experience today has solidified my decision to choose FNU as my future tertiary institution.” Vaturaiyawa also highlighted the challenges her school has faced, mentioning that they lacked Biology and Chemistry teachers during the first two terms of the year. While a Biology and Chemistry teacher has recently joined them for Term Three, she pointed out that a Home Economics teacher is still missing, and the vice-principal provides worksheets for those classes.
