Meretinai Vaturaiyawa, a student at Nakorotubu Secondary School, is determined to attend Fiji National University (FNU) for her tertiary education with the goal of becoming a nurse.
At the recent FNU Open Day, she focused on Food Science and explored the College of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Science. “I am eager to learn about the opportunities in the medical field,” Vaturaiyawa expressed.
The 16-year-old highlighted the presence of a health center in Namarai Village, Nakorotubu, Ra. However, she noted, “There is no one from Namarai or my village in Veidrala who works at that health center.” Her aspiration is to work there as a nurse one day.
Vaturaiyawa shared that she gained useful insights during the FNU Open Day in Nasinu. “I chose FNU as my future tertiary institution after today’s experience,” she stated.
Having enrolled in Year Nine in 2021 at a school established in 2020, she faced challenges this year due to a lack of Biology and Chemistry teachers during Terms One and Two. “We finally have a Biology and Chemistry teacher in Term Three, but now we don’t have a Home Economics teacher,” she added. For Home Economics classes, their vice-principal provides worksheets for the students.
