Nursing Dreams: A Student’s Journey to FNU

Meretinai Vaturaiyawa, a student at Nakorotubu Secondary School, has expressed her strong desire to attend Fiji National University (FNU) for her tertiary education, aiming to become a nurse.

At the FNU Open Day, she focused on Food Science and explored the College of Medicine, Nursing, and Health Science. “I am eager to learn about the opportunities in the medical field,” Ms. Vaturaiyawa stated.

The 16-year-old pointed out that Namarai Village, located in Nakorotubu, Ra, has a health center, but there are currently no individuals from her village, including Veidrala, working there. “It is my aim that one day I’ll be stationed at the health center at Namarai as a nurse,” she said.

She also noted that the FNU Open Day, held in Nasinu, provided her with valuable information that solidified her choice of FNU as her preferred institution. “I’ve chosen FNU as my future tertiary institution after the experience I’ve received today,” she added.

Vaturaiyawa shared that her school was founded in 2020, and she enrolled in Year Nine in 2021. However, she highlighted challenges faced by her school this year, mentioning a lack of Biology and Chemistry teachers in the first two terms. “We finally have a Biology and Chemistry teacher in Term Three, but then there is no Home Economics teacher,” she remarked. Currently, the vice-principal has been providing worksheets for the Home Economics classes.
