Nurses are encouraged to expand their education to encompass preventive measures concerning health risks associated with environmental factors, as emphasized by Lady Bale Ganilau. In her remarks during a nurses’ march in Suva City, Lady Ganilau highlighted the importance of understanding the impacts of environmental crises, such as global warming and pollution, on community health.

She articulated the noble essence of nursing, which involves providing care and compassion to patients during challenging times. However, she expressed concern that nurses often receive insufficient recognition for their extensive contributions, which go beyond standard duties.

Lady Ganilau pointed out that the environment faces numerous challenges, including the effects of nuclear energy, industrial waste, and chemical pollution. In her view, nurses play a crucial role in identifying how these environmental issues affect the health of their communities. They can advocate for health inquiries and lead initiatives aimed at improving environmental health through collaboration with appropriate authorities.

The discourse surrounding the vital role of nurses in promoting environmental health is especially relevant as Fiji grapples with rising concerns over waste management and environmental preservation. Similar discussions have emerged among community leaders and government officials, stressing the need for public education and engagement to foster a culture of environmental responsibility.

Dr. Sivendra Michael, the permanent secretary of the Environment Ministry, has echoed concerns about Fiji’s waste management practices, addressing the challenges posed by limited resources and the necessity for both policy changes and community accountability. He emphasizes the importance of integrating environmental awareness into education, suggesting initiatives like school composting programs as essential for nurturing responsible habits in children and families alike.

The hopeful perspective is that through collaborative efforts, enhancing education on environmental issues, and increasing awareness, Fiji can work toward a sustainable future where individuals and communities take pride in their natural surroundings. This collective action can significantly contribute to improving public health and safeguarding Fiji’s stunning landscapes for generations to come.
