Hundreds of Pacific Island workers, including many from Fiji, spent Christmas in New South Wales, far from their homes and families. Despite the emotional challenges of being apart during the festive season, many workers found a sense of warmth, belonging, and support in the local communities surrounding them.

In a heartfelt message shared on social media, the NSW Council for Pacific Communities acknowledged the difficulties that seasonal and migrant workers face while celebrating the holidays away from their loved ones. “Today thousands of our Pacific Islanders working here in NSW celebrated Christmas away from their families. This can be tough and challenging,” the council noted. They emphasized the sacrifices made by these workers, who leave their families behind to seek opportunities in Australia.

The council reported that, even in these trying times, instances of togetherness were witnessed across the state. “We have seen workers celebrate Christmas with their ‘Australian families’. Members of the community right around NSW have embraced our Pacific Islanders and included them in their celebrations,” the post stated, highlighting the inclusive spirit of the season.

In addition to the support from locals, the workers also demonstrated remarkable camaraderie amongst themselves. The council observed that these individuals banded together, fostering joy and creating a family-like atmosphere, transcending cultural differences. “We have seen workers band together to bring joy and happiness — people from different cultural backgrounds, from different countries, celebrating Christmas like a family,” they said.

This sense of community underscores the positive impact of connection and solidarity, especially during the holidays, offering a glimmer of hope for these workers as they navigate the challenges of being away from home.
