The Nasinu Secondary School (NSS) Under-17 rugby team is setting its sights on the Vodafone Fiji Secondary School Rugby League final after a significant semi-final victory against Marist Brothers High School. The NSS squad secured their place in the semi-finals with a decisive 24-10 win at St Marcellin Primary School.
Coach Semesa Matai indicated that this competition serves as their pre-season for the Vodafone Deans competition and expressed the importance of team bonding ahead of the upcoming quarterfinal. He emphasized the need to strengthen their unity, especially as most of the players are day scholars and will go into camp for better preparation this week.
Matai attributed the victory to their resilient mindset, referencing the biblical story of David and Goliath, stating, “We came in with the David’s motto that despite our build and stature we will beat Goliath.” He is hopeful for his team’s chances, remarking on the spiritual and personal growth of the athletes, suggesting an emphasis on acknowledging God to navigate life positively.
Last year, the NSS team reached the national quarterfinals but faced a narrow loss to Queen Victoria School (QVS), ending with a score of 24-18. Matai expressed optimism regarding their performance this year, noting the enhanced spiritual life and team cohesion among the players.
The draws for the national quarterfinals are anticipated to be released this week, adding to the excitement of the NSS team as they aim to make significant strides in this year’s tournament.
In other Eastern Zone Rugby League semifinals, the results showcased fierce competition across various age categories, underscoring the dynamic nature of the rugby league in Fiji. This results context adds to the anticipation surrounding NSS’s future matches as they chase glory in the tournament.
This positive trajectory of NSS, combined with their dedication and the community’s support, paints an encouraging picture as they navigate through the challenges of the remaining competitions.
