The NRL has announced the teams set to compete in the season openers taking place in Las Vegas next year, which will now feature three matches instead of the previously planned four. Notable matchups include the Canterbury Bulldogs going up against the St George Illawarra Dragons, and the North Queensland Cowboys squaring off against the Newcastle Knights. These games are scheduled for Allegiant Stadium on February 28, 2024 (March 1 in Australia).

Additionally, English Super League teams Hull Kingston Rovers and Leeds Rhinos will participate in this exciting kickoff event. However, due to the reduction in games, the women’s international match has been removed from the schedule, a change that follows the Jillaroos’ overwhelming victory earlier this year where they defeated England 90-4.

This year’s matches in Las Vegas are part of the NRL’s continuing efforts to expand the reach and popularity of rugby league internationally. The move to hold games in Las Vegas is particularly strategic, as it allows the NRL to tap into new markets and audiences.

The inclusion of prominent international teams in the opener reinforces the league’s commitment to showcase high-caliber rugby league globally while sparking excitement among fans in both Australia and the United States. As anticipation builds, many are hopeful that these matches could pave the way for more international exposure and engagement for rugby league in the future.
