A group of Korean volunteers recently hosted a nutrition event at Nasikawa Vision College in Nadroga, promoting healthy eating habits among local students. The four-day workshop, named Tiko Bula Bula, involved hands-on activities where the students sampled fresh local foods, guided by Colin Chung, the author of the Kana Vinaka book.
Subin Lim, the project coordinator, emphasized the importance of empowering adolescents with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively manage their physical health. She expressed her hope that students would internalize the key message, “You are what you eat.”
The initiative aims to cultivate sustainable healthy habits among participants, enhance emotional stability through artistic activities, and positively impact the community through cooperative experiences. This project aligns with the World Health Organization’s definition of health in contributing to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 3 and 4, with a focus on promoting overall well-being that encompasses physical, mental, and social health.
Most of the ingredients for the lessons were sourced from the Sigatoka market and local supermarkets, which not only ensured freshness but also supported the local economy. A total of 152 students in Years 9 and 10 engaged in the workshop activities, experiencing the importance of nutrition in a practical and engaging way.
Lim articulated her hopes for the project, stating that her ultimate goal is to help Fijians lead healthier and happier lives. “Seeing their well-being improve is what brings me the most happiness,” she conveyed.
This initiative highlights the collaborative efforts of volunteers dedicated to enhancing community health, fostering a culture of wellness and sustainability among younger generations. As communities continue to promote healthy eating and nutrition education, there is optimism for a healthier future for all.
