Abdul Mannan, a former football player for Rewa and Nasinu, recently shared his nostalgic reflections on the pride and camaraderie of representing one’s district in the sport. As part of The Fiji Times’ preparations for the upcoming 2025 BiC Fiji FACT tournament, Mannan emphasized the sense of unity among players during his career.

Playing for Nasinu from 1990 to 1992 and Rewa from 1992 to 1998, Mannan participated in significant tournaments including the Fiji FACT and the Battle of the Giants. He expressed appreciation for the current state of the game, noting advancements that have emerged since his playing days: “Back in our days, we didn’t have an academy, we didn’t have what they have now,” he explained, attributing the competitive spirit of the era to local players’ deep pride for their districts.

Despite facing early exits in the Fiji FACT during his tenure, Mannan’s football journey was marked by numerous accomplishments, including serving as captain of the Rewa team from 1978 to 1985 and coaching Nasinu to victory in the Inter-District Competition in 1990. Off the field, Mannan balanced a successful career in printing while contributing to football, and he now co-manages a private security business in Suva.

In light of the Fiji FACT’s imminent kickoff, Mannan expressed excitement to reconnect with former teammates and support the participating teams, demonstrating the enduring connections forged through the sport.

This reflection not only highlights the rich history of Fijian football but also showcases the positive transitions within the community, as veteran players like Mannan continue to inspire future generations. With the upcoming tournament, there is a hopeful atmosphere surrounding Fiji’s football landscape, fostering athletic growth and unity among players and fans alike.
