Fisheries initiatives in the northern regions are making significant strides in supporting local farmers by expanding their aquaculture operations. Recently, the Ministry of Fisheries North Aquaculture Team conducted a vital fish and prawn stocking activity in Wainikoro and Nasarava.
During this initiative, 3,000 tilapia fry were introduced into Meli Sigavinaka’s pond in Lagalaga, Wainikoro. This effort is aimed at promoting sustainable fish farming practices and bolstering local livelihoods. In Nasarava, 1,000 prawn post-larvae were distributed to community member Feroz Khan, fostering diversified aquaculture within the local agriculture sector.
To ensure the success of this initiative, farmers were provided with essential feed supplies, including tilapia pellets, prior to the stocking. This preparatory step is crucial for the optimal growth and survival of the fish during their first month.
The Ministry of Fisheries emphasized that these initiatives are part of a larger strategy to enhance local aquaculture, improve food security, and create additional income sources for farming communities. As these programs continue to make progress, they not only promise to strengthen the local economy but also support the sustainability of fishing practices in the region. This positive development could lead to a revitalization of aquaculture and strengthen community ties through cooperative farming efforts.
