Labasa’s Northpole FC triumphed in the 2024 Cecil’s National Club Championship by edging out Buiduna FC from Tailevu Naitasiri in a thrilling final that concluded with a score of 6-3 at the Fiji FA Academy Ground in Vatuwaqa.
The match kicked off with Salimone Ravonokula putting Northpole FC ahead in the 10th minute, followed by a penalty goal from veteran player Christopher Wasasala twenty minutes later, extending their lead. Buiduna FC fought back with a goal from France Catarogo in the 38th minute, and Sairusi Qiolevu equalized just before halftime, setting the stage for a captivating second half.
However, Northpole FC showcased their strength after the break, scoring four goals through Melvin Mani, Wasasala, Eparama Moraica, and Malakai Arabaz. Their remarkable performance not only led them to victory but also earned them $4,000 as winners of the championship. Additionally, Northpole FC was awarded the Fair Play prize, with Wasasala being named the tournament’s top scorer for netting six goals, thus receiving the Golden Boot Award. Ilisoni Lolaivalu was also recognized for his extraordinary contributions with the Golden Ball Award.
Buiduna FC did not leave empty-handed; they received $1,000, and their goalkeeper, Kitione Baleiloa, was awarded the Golden Glove Award for his outstanding efforts throughout the tournament.
