Labasa’s Northpole FC emerged victorious in the 2024 Cecil’s National Club Championship, achieving a thrilling 6-3 win against Buiduna FC from Tailevu Naitasiri at the Fiji FA Academy Ground in Vatuwaqa. The match showcased an exciting display of football, with Northpole FC taking an early lead in the 10th minute, courtesy of Salimone Ravonokula. Christopher Wasasala then extended their advantage by converting a penalty just 20 minutes later.
As the first half progressed, Buiduna FC fought back, with France Catarogo scoring in the 38th minute, followed by Sairusi Qiolevu who leveled the score prior to halftime, setting the stage for an exhilarating second half.
In the final 45 minutes, Northpole FC proved their dominance by netting four additional goals, with contributions from Melvin Mani, Wasasala again, Eparama Moraica, and Malakai Arabaz. This impressive performance not only secured their championship title but also a $4000 cash prize.
Northpole FC’s sportsmanship was acknowledged as they received the Fair Play award, while Christopher Wasasala distinguished himself as the tournament’s top scorer, taking home the Golden Boot Award with a total of six goals. Ilisoni Lolaivalu was also honored with the Golden Ball Award for his exceptional performances throughout the tournament.
Buiduna FC, while not victorious, left with $1000 and their goalkeeper, Kitione Baleiloa, was celebrated with the Golden Glove Award, recognizing his excellent contributions in goal.
This victory not only highlights Northpole FC’s strength and teamwork but also emphasizes the growing talent and competitive spirit in Fijian football—creating hope for future tournaments where clubs can continue to develop and inspire the next generation of players.
