The remarkable achievements of Northern schools during last year’s Ratu Sukuna Day celebrations in Suva have set the stage for this year’s national event, which will take place in Labasa. Josefa Toganivalu, Deputy Chief Executive of the iTaukei Affairs Board, has noted that schools from the Northern Division secured all prizes in the various competitions, showcasing their exceptional leadership and enthusiasm.

This year’s celebration promises to be more extensive and inclusive, with key institutions like the Fiji Museum and the National Archives of Fiji participating alongside other government departments. The four-day event will feature a vibrant array of cultural activities, educational exhibitions, and evening entertainment aimed at engaging the local community.

Toganivalu has extended an invitation to the Labasa community, encouraging everyone to attend both day and night events at Subrail Park. “There will be entertainment and various activities at the grounds. Government services will also be available,” he stated.

This year, seven clusters have been organized across the provinces of Cakaudrove, Bua, and Macuata, where competitions will include oratory contests and traditional games celebrating the legacy of the late Ratu Sukuna. The finale of the celebrations will take place on Friday in Labasa in the presence of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.

The Ratu Sukuna Day is not just a celebration—it serves as a platform for cultural pride and community unity. It highlights the importance of fostering relationships between diverse groups within Fiji, reinforces the significance of cultural heritage, and promotes a shared vision for the future.

As anticipation builds for the event, it presents an incredible opportunity for the people of Labasa to come together, celebrate their heritage, and inspire future generations through the life and work of Ratu Sukuna, a key figure in Fijian history.
