Northern Rugby League on the Rise: A New Era of Talent Development

Fiji Bati head coach, Wise Kativerata, recently highlighted the importance of teaching basic rugby league skills to aspiring players in the Northern Division to cultivate a strong talent pool. Following a two-day training workshop in Labasa, he emphasized the need to change the perception among young athletes that only rugby sevens and fifteens are the esteemed forms of the sport.

Kativerata pointed out that rugby league is an emerging sport offering numerous opportunities for budding athletes, citing successful players like Semi Valemi and Semi Radradra, who have made their mark in the Australian National Rugby League (NRL). He believes that while rugby league may seem straightforward, a deep understanding of its fundamentals is essential for player development.

He also expressed optimism about the prospects for Northern-based players to secure professional contracts abroad. According to Kativerata, starting grassroots development at a young age, around 14, is crucial, with plans for the Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) to visit Vanua Levu and other islands over the next six years to promote the sport outside of Viti Levu.

Encouraging participation among women, Motu Lalagavesi, the coach of the Macuata women’s rugby team, shared her enthusiasm for the sport, particularly the engaging six-tackle rule. Northern State Rugby League interim president, Alan Tuinasoni, echoed this sentiment, urging the 22 clubs in the division to cultivate women’s teams as well. Zones like Labasa and Dreketi are already active, with Labasa hosting eight clubs and Dreketi-Seaqaqa also having eight, while Bua contributes six clubs.

This concerted effort signifies a promising future for rugby league in Fiji, with potential growth in both male and female participation. The foundation being laid now will foster talent and passion for rugby league in the region, ensuring a brighter future for the sport and its players.

In summary, the movement to intensify rugby league training and participation in the Northern Division not only encourages young athletes but also opens new avenues for female players, making rugby league a promising avenue for many.
