More than 120 golf enthusiasts participated in the Northern Open Golf Tournament at the Fiji Golf Club in Vatuwaqa, Suva. Traditionally held in Labasa, the tournament was relocated to Suva to attract more participants and alleviate travel expenses for golfers coming from Viti Levu, given the high costs associated with airfare and accommodation. The two-day event aimed to raise funds for the Labasa Golf Club to enhance its facilities.

The event was organized by Global Girmit, a charitable organization dedicated to fostering community engagement through such initiatives. Ganesh Chand, chairman of Global Girmit, highlighted the convenience of hosting the tournament in Suva, ensuring greater participation without the financial burden on players from the main island. Despite the logistical challenges inherent in hosting a large-scale event, Chand expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from sponsors. Contributions ranged from a modest $20 to $2000, showcasing the collective effort to make the tournament a success.

The tournament’s impact extends beyond the sport, with proceeds earmarked for the development of golf facilities in Labasa. This move underscores the commitment to nurturing a robust golfing culture in Fiji, paralleling other significant golfing events in the country. Recent tournaments, such as the Nadi Airport Golf Open and Fiji Golf Club’s competitions, also highlight a growing enthusiasm and community involvement in golf across the islands. These events, backed by local and international sponsors, reflect the growing participation of future golfers and the establishment of a conducive environment for the sport’s growth in Fiji.

The tournament concluded with a sense of camaraderie and a shared goal of supporting sports development. This aligns with the broader trend of using golf not only as a competitive platform but also a means to build community spirit and support local initiatives, creating a positive outlook for the future of the sport in Fiji.
