The Bluelight under-21 sevens team, primarily composed of young men from the northern provinces of Cakaudrove, Bua, and Macuata, has emerged as a beacon of hope and growth in the region. This team reflects a passionate cohort of players, many of whom face challenges such as unemployment, farming, and being street dwellers.

Head coach Aisea Vusonitokalau, hailing from Kadavu, initiated a commendable youth development program in Labasa. His aim is to leverage rugby as a means to instill discipline, purpose, and create opportunities for these young players.

Beyond their athletic pursuits, the team is actively participating in community service, engaging in activities such as cleaning local shops and assisting taxpayers in Labasa. Vusonitokalau highlighted that these community initiatives not only promote a sense of responsibility but also enhance the unity and commitment among the players.

As the Bluelight under-21 team prepares for their second appearance at the 17th Fiji Bitter Savusavu Sevens, the coaching staff remains cognizant of the team’s position within the Fiji Bitter Sevens series. Lessons learned from their earlier participation at the Labasa 7s have helped the management identify areas that require improvement, which they are actively addressing through strategic planning.

The head coach recognizes that the team is a “work in progress,” with players gradually evolving to meet the standards expected at this level of competition. Vusonitokalau expressed gratitude for the essential support provided by various organizations, including the Labasa Chamber of Commerce, the Fiji Police Force in Labasa, and the Labasa Town Council, which have all contributed to the players’ development through community service initiatives.

With ongoing support and dedication to their development, the Bluelight under-21 team illustrates that rugby can serve as more than just a sport; it can be a transformative journey for young individuals. The tournament concludes tomorrow, marking an important chapter for these aspiring athletes as they strive for success both on and off the field.
