A flash flood alert has been issued for the northern regions of Viti Levu, encompassing Lautoka, Ba, as well as their interiors, alongside areas in Ra and Naitasiri. This alert also extends to Vanua Levu. The Fiji Meteorological Service has reported that a trough of low pressure, accompanied by cloud cover and rain, continues to impact these northern areas, increasing the likelihood of flash flooding.
The primary concern remains the potential for flash flooding due to isolated instances of heavy rainfall. Authorities have noted that possible consequences include flooding in drainage systems, small streams, low-water bridges, and roads, particularly in low-lying regions.
Additionally, a heavy rain alert is active in the Northern Division, which includes the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, as well as Tavua and Ra–Rakiraki areas. These regions can expect intermittent rain, which may be heavy at times, coupled with occasional thunderstorms affecting Vanua Levu, Taveuni, and surrounding smaller islands.
Residents in the impacted areas are encouraged to stay alert, avoid traversing flooded crossings, and follow all safety warnings issued by local authorities. The focus on community awareness underscores the importance of preparedness in mitigating risks during severe weather events.
