Fiji Bati head coach Wise Kativerata emphasized the importance of teaching the fundamentals of rugby league to aspiring players during a recent two-day training workshop held in Labasa. He underscored that changing the perception among youth that rugby sevens and fifteens are the only respected forms of the sport is crucial for developing a strong pool of talent in the Northern Division.
Kativerata pointed out that rugby league is an emerging sport that offers numerous opportunities, citing the success of players like Semi Valemi and Semi Radradra, who hail from the North and have made a name for themselves in the Australian National Rugby League (NRL). He expressed that while rugby league is a straightforward sport, mastering its basic skills is essential for player growth.
To foster talent in the region, Kativerata announced a six-year initiative by the Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) to promote grassroots development, with plans to introduce the sport to players as young as 14 in Vanua Levu and surrounding maritime islands.
Motu Lalagavesi, a female participant and the Macuata women’s rugby coach, remarked on the appeal of rugby league, especially highlighting the interesting six-tackle rule, which adds enjoyment to the game. Alan Tuinasoni, the interim president of the Northern State Rugby League, encouraged the 22 registered clubs in the division to prioritize the development of women’s teams.
This initiative not only aims to enhance the skills of youth in the Northern Division but also promotes inclusivity in sports, paving the way for women to engage in rugby league.
