The Office of the Divisional Commissioner North has announced that proactive measures are being implemented in response to impending wet weather expected within the next 48 hours.
Earlier today, Divisional Commissioner Uraia Rainima convened a meeting with leaders from essential services, including the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), Police, Fire Services, Ministry of Education, Fiji Red Cross, Fiji Meteorological Services, and the Land Transport Authority. The purpose of this meeting was to finalize operational plans and ensure that resources are adequately prepared to assist communities that may be affected by the weather conditions.
The FRA has confirmed that all connecting roads across the island remain clear and that accessibility is currently not hindered, despite experiencing heavy rainfall overnight. The Fiji Meteorological Service has provided a detailed weather forecast that allows stakeholders to enhance their preparedness strategies effectively.
Additionally, the Ministry of Education has been advised to prepare schools as potential evacuation centres if the situation necessitates such measures.
Residents living in low-lying areas are highly encouraged to take proactive steps by moving to higher ground during daylight hours to mitigate risks associated with potential flooding. Authorities further urge the public to avoid unnecessary travel at night to ensure personal safety and safeguard emergency responders.
Anyone who is unsure about the location of evacuation centres or requires assistance is advised to contact local authorities or the police immediately.
Commissioner Rainima also called on farmers to relocate their livestock to higher ground and to take necessary precautions to protect their livelihoods.
“We urge everyone to prioritize their safety during this time. Listen carefully to weather advisories and updates on the radio, and take early action to prepare, especially those in low-lying areas. Avoid unnecessary movement at night, and remember, your safety is our top priority. Stay calm, and do not hesitate to reach out for assistance if needed,” said Rainima.
The Commissioner’s Office will continue monitoring the situation closely and will provide regular updates. Residents are encouraged to remain informed through official announcements and cooperate with emergency services as needed.
In summary, the proactive measures being taken highlight the importance of community safety and preparedness in the face of adverse weather. It showcases how local authorities are working together to ensure the well-being of residents, especially those in vulnerable areas. The emphasis on collaboration and community vigilance paints a hopeful picture of resilience during challenging weather conditions.
