The Divisional Commissioner for the Northern region has announced proactive measures in response to anticipated wet weather conditions expected to last for the next 48 hours.
This morning, Divisional Commissioner Uraia Rainima engaged with various essential service leaders, including representatives from the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), Police, Fire Services, the Ministry of Education, Fiji Red Cross, and Fiji Meteorological Services, in order to finalize operational strategies and ensure resources are in place to support potentially affected communities.
Currently, the FRA has confirmed that roads across the island remain clear and accessible, despite experiencing heavy rainfall overnight. The Fiji Meteorological Service has provided detailed weather forecasts, which will aid stakeholders in fine-tuning their preparedness efforts.
The Ministry of Education has also been alerted to prepare schools to serve as evacuation centers if necessary. In light of the weather, residents living in low-lying areas are strongly advised to prepare early and consider relocating to higher ground during daylight hours to mitigate potential risks.
Authorities caution against unnecessary travel at night, urging individuals to prioritize safety for both themselves and first responders. Those unsure about evacuation centers or needing assistance are encouraged to contact local authorities or the police.
Additionally, Rainima has advised farmers to move livestock to higher ground and implement necessary precautions to safeguard their livelihoods.
In a message highlighting the importance of safety, Rainima stated, “We urge everyone to prioritize their safety during this time. Listen carefully to weather advisories and updates on the radio, and take early action to prepare, especially those in low-lying areas. Avoid unnecessary movement at night, and remember, your safety is our top priority. Stay calm, and do not hesitate to reach out for assistance if needed.”
The Commissioner’s Office will closely monitor the evolving situation and will provide timely updates. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and cooperate with emergency services.
This proactive approach from the authorities reflects a strong commitment to community safety and resilience in the face of adverse weather conditions. By taking early action and preparing effectively, residents can help minimize the impact of the weather on their lives and livelihoods.
