The Office of the Divisional Commissioner North is taking proactive measures to ensure preparedness for expected wet weather conditions over the next 48 hours.

Divisional Commissioner Uraia Rainima convened a meeting with leaders from essential services including the Fiji Roads Authority, Police, Fire Services, Ministry of Education, Fiji Red Cross, and the Fiji Meteorological Services to finalize operational plans and deploy necessary resources to assist communities in need.

Despite heavy rainfall overnight, the Fiji Roads Authority has reported that all connecting roads on the island remain clear and accessible. The Fiji Meteorological Service provided a comprehensive weather forecast, allowing all stakeholders to refine their preparedness strategies accordingly.

In anticipation of the weather changes, the Ministry of Education has been advised to prepare schools to potentially serve as evacuation centers. Residents in low-lying areas are urged to take action by moving to higher ground during daylight hours to reduce risks.

Authorities recommend minimizing travel at night to ensure safety and ease the strain on first responders. Residents unsure about evacuation centers or needing assistance are encouraged to contact local authorities or police immediately.

Rainima has specifically advised farmers to relocate their livestock to safer areas and take protective measures to safeguard their assets.

He emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety, urging individuals to stay updated through radio advisories and take early actions to ensure well-being. The Commissioner’s Office promises to keep a close watch on the situation and provide timely updates, reminding residents to stay informed and cooperate with emergency services.

This proactive approach reflects a strong community spirit and a commitment to safety, with officials mobilizing quickly to safeguard residents and infrastructure. By remaining vigilant and prepared, the community can better navigate the challenges posed by adverse weather conditions.
