The Divisional Commissioner North’s office has announced proactive measures in preparation for impending wet weather expected over the next 48 hours. Today, Divisional Commissioner Uraia Rainima convened with leaders from essential services, including the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), Police, Fire Services, Ministry of Education, Fiji Red Cross, Fiji Meteorological Services, and the Land Transport Authority, to finalize operational strategies and ensure resources are available to support affected communities.
The FRA reported that the island’s connecting roads remain clear and accessible, despite a night of heavy rainfall. The Fiji Meteorological Service has provided detailed weather forecasts, which will help stakeholders refine their preparedness efforts.
As a precaution, the Ministry of Education has been notified to prepare schools as potential evacuation centers if necessary. Residents in low-lying areas are strongly advised to prepare and relocate to higher ground during the day to mitigate risks. Authorities have also urged people to avoid unnecessary travel at night to ensure safety and to alleviate strain on first responders.
Farmers have been advised by Rainima to relocate their livestock to higher ground and to take steps to protect their livelihoods as the weather worsens.
The Commissioner emphasized the importance of safety: “We urge everyone to prioritize their safety during this time. Listen carefully to weather advisories and updates on the radio, and take early action to prepare, especially those in low-lying areas. Avoid unnecessary movement at night, and your safety is our top priority. Stay calm, and do not hesitate to reach out for assistance if needed.”
The Commissioner’s Office will maintain vigilance over the situation and will provide timely updates. Residents are encouraged to remain informed through official channels and to comply with emergency service directives.
In summary, the region is taking necessary steps to ensure community safety in the face of adverse weather, emphasizing preparedness, effective communication, and cooperation among local services and residents. As the community comes together in these challenging times, there is hope that collective efforts will mitigate the impact of the weather.
