The Office of the Divisional Commissioner North is actively preparing for expected wet weather conditions over the next two days. Earlier today, Divisional Commissioner Northern Uraia Rainima held a meeting with leaders from essential services, including the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), Police, Fire Services, Ministry of Education, Fiji Red Cross, Fiji Meteorological Services, and the Land Transport Authority. The purpose of this meeting was to finalize operational plans and ensure that resources are ready to support communities that may be affected.
The FRA has confirmed that although heavy rain fell overnight, the connecting roads across the island remain clear, and there are currently no accessibility issues. The Fiji Meteorological Service has provided a comprehensive weather forecast, which allows stakeholders to fine-tune their preparedness strategies.
In anticipation of possible evacuations, the Ministry of Education has been instructed to prepare schools to serve as evacuation centers, should the situation require it. Residents in low-lying areas are strongly advised to prepare in advance and consider moving to higher ground during daylight to mitigate risks. Authorities also urge individuals to limit travel at night to maintain safety and protect first responders.
Farmers are being encouraged by Rainima to relocate livestock to safer areas and take necessary precautions to safeguard their livelihoods.
“We urge everyone to prioritize their safety during this time,” Rainima stated. “Listen carefully to weather advisories and updates on the radio, and take early action to prepare, especially those in low-lying areas. Avoid unnecessary movement at night, and remember, your safety is our top priority. Stay calm, and do not hesitate to reach out for assistance if needed.”
The Commissioner’s Office promises to monitor the situation closely and deliver timely updates to the public. Residents are reminded to remain informed through official channels and to collaborate with emergency services to ensure community safety.
Overall, while the impending weather poses challenges, the proactive measures taken by officials highlight a commendable commitment to community safety and preparedness.
