The Office of the Divisional Commissioner North is actively preparing for anticipated wet weather conditions in the coming 48 hours. Divisional Commissioner Northern Uraia Rainima convened with leaders from essential services including the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), Police, Fire Services, Ministry of Education, Fiji Red Cross, Fiji Meteorological Services, and the Land Transport Authority to finalize operational plans and ensure the necessary resources are available to support affected communities.

Currently, the FRA has confirmed that all connecting roads across the island remain clear and accessible, despite heavy rainfall experienced overnight. The Fiji Meteorological Service has provided a detailed weather forecast, allowing stakeholders to adjust their preparedness strategies accordingly.

In anticipation of potential evacuations, the Ministry of Education has been instructed to prepare schools as designated evacuation centers should the situation necessitate. Residents living in low-lying areas are strongly encouraged to begin preparations by relocating to higher ground during daylight hours to minimize risks associated with flooding.

Authorities are also advising the public to avoid unnecessary travel at night to enhance safety for both themselves and first responders. In the event that residents require assistance or are uncertain about evacuation centers, they are encouraged to contact local authorities or the police for guidance.

Commissioner Rainima has issued a directive for farmers to move livestock to elevated ground and to take additional precautions to protect their livelihoods during this time.

In a message of reassurance, Rainima emphasized, “We urge everyone to prioritize their safety during this time. Listen carefully to weather advisories and updates on the radio, and take early action to prepare, especially those in low-lying areas. Avoid unnecessary movement at night, and remember, your safety is our top priority. Stay calm, and do not hesitate to reach out for assistance if needed.”

The Commissioner’s Office will keep a close watch on the situation and provide updates as necessary. Residents are encouraged to remain informed through official channels and to cooperate fully with emergency services.

This proactive approach by the authorities is a testament to their commitment to public safety and community support in the face of adversity, fostering a collective resilience among residents as they prepare for the approaching weather conditions.
