The Office of the Divisional Commissioner North has announced proactive measures in preparation for expected wet weather conditions in the coming 48 hours. Divisional Commissioner Uraia Rainima convened a meeting with team leaders from key agencies, including the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), Police, Fire Services, the Ministry of Education, Fiji Red Cross, Fiji Meteorological Services, and the Land Transport Authority to finalize operational plans and ensure that resources are ready to assist communities at risk.
Despite experiencing heavy rain overnight, the FRA reported that the connecting roads across the island remain accessible. The Fiji Meteorological Service has provided forecasts that will help refine the preparedness strategies of the involved stakeholders.
The Ministry of Education has been alerted to prepare schools to serve as evacuation centers if necessary. Residents in low-lying regions are advised to take precautions and move to higher ground during daylight to mitigate risks associated with potential flooding.
Authorities are urging the public to minimize movement at night for safety and to aid first responders. In case of uncertainty about evacuation centers or if assistance is needed, residents are encouraged to contact local authorities or the police.
Commissioner Rainima has also advised farmers to relocate their livestock to higher ground and take steps to safeguard their properties.
In a statement, Rainima emphasized, “We urge everyone to prioritize their safety during this time. Listen carefully to weather advisories and updates on the radio, and take early action to prepare, especially those in low-lying areas. Avoid unnecessary movement at night, and remember, your safety is our top priority. Stay calm, and do not hesitate to reach out for assistance if needed.”
The Commissioner’s Office will monitor the situation closely and provide timely updates. Residents are reminded to stay informed through official announcements and to cooperate with emergency services.
This collaborative approach amongst various agencies showcases a strong commitment to community safety. As weather conditions change, timely communication and preparedness efforts can greatly reduce risks and ensure that residents are kept safe.
