A flash flood warning is currently active for low-lying and flood-prone regions within the Northern Division. Uraia Rainima, the Commissioner for Northern, indicated that following a strong wind warning issued by the Fiji Meteorological Service on Saturday, he convened an urgent meeting with essential service team leaders.
Mr. Rainima stated, “We met with representatives from the Fiji Roads Authority, Fiji Police, National Fire Authority, and others involved in essential services.” He noted that despite recent heavy rains, roads across the island remained clear over the weekend.
Additionally, he mentioned that relevant stakeholders, including the Ministry of Education, have been notified to prepare schools designated as evacuation centers. “All necessary arrangements have been established to address any emergencies,” Mr. Rainima added. He emphasized the importance of safety, advising families to seek safe locations in advance of potential flood risks to protect their lives and aid emergency responders.
This proactive approach demonstrates a strong commitment to safety and preparedness in the face of weather challenges. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and heed the advice of authorities to ensure their safety during this period of potential flooding.
As the community faces these environmental challenges, it’s heartening to see the collaborative efforts between various agencies to safeguard lives, showcasing resilience and a commitment to public safety.
