The Office of the Divisional Commissioner North has announced that preparations are underway to address anticipated wet weather over the next 48 hours. In a meeting earlier today, Divisional Commissioner Northern Uraia Rainima convened with leaders from essential services such as the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), Police, Fire Services, the Ministry of Education, Fiji Red Cross, and Fiji Meteorological Services, as well as the Land Transport Authority, to finalize operational plans and ensure that resources are available to assist affected communities.

Current reports from the FRA indicate that the connecting roads across the island remain clear and accessible, even following heavy rainfall overnight. The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued detailed forecasts that are helping stakeholders adjust their preparedness strategies accordingly.

The Ministry of Education has been directed to prepare schools to serve as evacuation centers if necessary. Residents in low-lying areas are encouraged to take proactive measures by relocating to higher ground during daylight to minimize flood risks. Authorities urge individuals to limit movement at night to enhance safety for themselves and first responders.

Furthermore, farmers are advised to move livestock to higher ground and take steps to safeguard their livelihoods.

Rainima emphasizes the importance of safety during this period, encouraging everyone to stay informed through weather updates and radio announcements, and to act diligently, particularly those in vulnerable areas. Residents are reminded to remain calm and reach out for help if needed.

The Commissioner’s Office will keep a close watch on the evolving situation and provide timely updates. Residents are encouraged to stay tuned to official announcements and cooperate fully with emergency services.

This proactive approach highlights the commitment to community safety and fosters a spirit of cooperation among various agencies, allowing for a more prepared and resilient community in the face of adverse weather.

In these challenging situations, the emphasis on preparedness and safety can lead to stronger communal bonds and a greater understanding of the importance of disaster readiness.
